We celebrate our 4th birthday

From a simple idea to 10M scans a year, SQR marks 4 years of growth, stability, and building a QR code platform users can truly rely on.

This month, SQR celebrates its 4th birthday. It’s been an incredible journey from a simple idea to a tool that now handles over 10 million scans a year. Here’s how we got here.

The Beginning

When we started in January 2022, the goal was simple: create a QR code generator that just worked. Most free tools were either limited or expensive if you wanted extra options. We thought it could be better—and cheaper. That’s how Square QR was born. Shortly after, we shortened it to SQR and secured the domain sqr.co, which also made for perfect short URLs. Later, we bought shortqr.com as our main site, a name that perfectly explains what we do: combining short links and QR codes into dynamic QR codes you never have to reprint.

Key Milestones

Over the years, we’ve hit some major milestones. Today, SQR handles 10 million scans a year consistently. We automated things like custom domains, so you can create a short link with a new domain in minutes. But one of the things that really sets SQR apart is that our founder, Dave, still handles custom support personally. That hands-on approach keeps us close to our users and ensures we build exactly what people need.

Challenges Along the Way

Running a platform at this scale hasn’t been easy. With hundreds of thousands of links and QR codes, technical challenges have been constant. At the end of 2025, we focused heavily on stability, making sure the platform runs smoothly 99% of the time. Custom domains, link management, and reliability were all areas we refined to give users peace of mind.

Evolution and Growth

SQR faced tough times in 2024. We experimented with new products, but feedback from our users reminded us that what we already had was strong. Together with our community, we refined and focused on the core product. Today, SQR is stable, reliable, and fully equipped to support marketing needs for businesses of any size.

Looking Ahead

The most exciting part? We’re in a position to grow without worrying about whether the platform will hold up. SQR is now a service our users can fully rely on for their marketing materials, campaigns, and daily work. With stability and trust built over four years, the next chapter is all about scaling smarter and continuing to make QR codes and short links simple for everyone.

Thank you to all our users, old and new, for being part of this journey. Here’s to the next four years—and beyond.

Barcodes are back!

We rebuilt SQR’s barcode feature from the ground up. More reliable scans, better exports, extra barcode types, and simple customization—now available in the dashboard again.

Barcodes have been part of SQR before. We turned them off for a while because the old version had limitations and a few bugs we weren’t happy with. Rather than patching it, we rebuilt the barcode feature from scratch.

The new barcode editor is faster, more stable, and works consistently across all supported barcode types. Generation is now more reliable, exports are cleaner, and the output is easier to use in real-world printing scenarios.

We also added more customization options. You can now adjust size, spacing, and visual settings depending on the barcode type, without breaking scan reliability. The goal here was not to make barcodes flashy, but to make them usable and predictable. What you generate should scan the same today, tomorrow, and after printing thousands of labels.

Support for additional barcode types has been expanded as well. This makes the editor useful for practical cases like product labels, inventory, packaging, and internal tracking. Nothing experimental. Just the formats people actually use.

Barcodes are available directly inside the SQR dashboard and are included in all plans. There is also a free barcode editor available if you just need to generate a code without signing up.

For developers, barcode generation is also available via the SQR API. This makes it easy to generate barcodes programmatically for apps, systems, or automated workflows. Barcode API Documentation is available here.

This update does not change SQR’s focus. QR codes and dynamic links are still at the core of the platform. Barcodes exist as a supporting feature, for situations where a traditional barcode is the better tool.

As always, we’ll keep improving this quietly in the background. If something doesn’t work the way you expect, let us know.
