SMS QR Code

What it is, how it works, and when to use it

An SMS QR Code opens the user’s messaging app with a new text message already prepared. When someone scans it, their phone instantly creates an SMS draft with your number filled in. You can also prefill the message body so the user just presses Send.

It removes all friction: no typing the number, no copying, no mistakes. This makes SMS QRs perfect for quick support, confirmations, signups, feedback, delivery updates, or internal communication.

It works on all smartphones with SMS capability.

How to create an SMS QR Code

When you open the SMS QR generator on SQR, you’ll see two fields:

1. Phone number

This is the number the SMS will be sent to.
Use international format so it works for all users.
Examples:
+1 202 555 0149
+31 6 12345678
+44 7300 900123

This number can’t be changed after printing unless you use a dynamic QR.

2. Prefilled SMS message

Optional.
This preloads the SMS body text. The user can edit it before sending.
Useful for structured, consistent messages.

Examples:

  • “Hi, I need help with my order.”
  • “I’d like to confirm my reservation.”
  • “My customer ID is…”
  • “YES” (for automated reply systems)

When someone scans the QR, the message draft appears instantly.

Common uses

People use SMS QR Codes to make texting fast and error-free:

  • Customer support requests
  • Reservation confirmations
  • Event or ticket check-ins
  • Delivery updates
  • Automated “reply with keyword” systems
  • Feedback or reviews
  • Service or repair requests
  • Staff communication

It works especially well in mobile-heavy environments where users already rely on SMS.

Limitations

  • Works only on devices capable of sending SMS
  • Users need mobile coverage or SMS service
  • Static QR Codes can’t be edited after printing
(Use a dynamic QR for full flexibility)

Best practices

  • Always enter the number in full international format
  • Keep prefilled messages short
  • Add a “Scan to send SMS” label for clarity
  • Test on both iPhone and Android
  • Use dynamic if the number may change later

SMS QR Codes are one of the fastest ways to trigger mobile communication with almost zero friction.
