URL QR Code

What it is, how it works, and when to use it

A URL QR Code sends people directly to a webpage the moment they scan it. Instead of typing a link or searching manually, the user’s browser opens instantly with your URL loaded.

This makes it perfect for menus, landing pages, sign-ups, product pages, promotions, portfolios, event pages, app downloads, and anything else online.

It works on all modern smartphones and requires only an internet connection.

How to create a URL QR Code

The URL QR generator on SQR has two parts:

1. URL

Enter the link you want people to open when they scan the QR.

Examples:
https://yourrestaurant.com/menu
https://yourbrand.com/offer
https://yourapp.com/download

Make sure you include https:// so the link works correctly.
The page must be publicly accessible.

2. Dynamic QR code (optional)

This option lets you turn your QR into a dynamic short link.

What it does:

  • Creates a QR code that points to an internal SQR short link
  • You can change the destination anytime from your dashboard
  • No reprinting needed
  • You can also track scans, see analytics, and manage redirects

Use this when you aren’t sure the link will stay the same, or when you want analytics.

If you leave it off, your QR becomes a static QR that points directly to the URL.

Common uses

URL QR Codes are the most flexible type and are used everywhere:

  • Restaurant menus
  • Landing pages for ads and promotions
  • Newsletter and waitlist sign-ups
  • Product pages and discount campaigns
  • Event details, schedules, and tickets
  • App Store / Google Play download links
  • Portfolio, CV or contact page
  • Invoices, receipts, packaging and flyers

Great for offline to online conversion.

Limitations

  • Requires internet access
  • Static URL QRs cannot be changed after printing
  • If the link breaks, the QR breaks (use dynamic to avoid this)

Best practices

  • Always test the link before printing
  • Keep the URL short and clean
  • Use dynamic if you need flexibility or analytics
  • Add a clear call to action like “Scan to view menu”
  • Make sure the destination is mobile-friendly

A URL QR Code is the fastest way to send people anywhere online with a single scan.
